Auto Centerstack Concept
The Simplifying Power of Polycarbonate
Automotive Center Stack Prototype Illuminates Design Possibilities
The luxury automotive interior of today requires the innovation and integration of the newest, most advanced technologies. No longer can simple leather seats or moon roofs satisfy the auto consumer of 2012 and beyond. To satisfy growing demands, Bayer is working to simplify the process of incorporating technology into interiors for automotive OEMs by focusing on solutions for the center stack — the control-bearing console between the driver and passenger seats.
By forming Makrofol® HF 278 G-4 polycarbonate film using a high-pressure forming (HPF) process, Bayer has created a center stack concept which provides greater functionality. It combines printed hidden symbols, a backlit LCD screen offering improved efficiency compared with traditional materials, and 3-D parts. Makrofol HF also addresses the increased aesthetic demands by providing a scratch- and chemical-resistant surface, protected graphics and custom textures.
Additionally, the capacitive switch design in the center stack incorporates the use of conductive ink printed on the film second surface to create circuits for controlling various functions displayed on the screen. Compared to traditional printed circuit boards the technology enables the design and engineering of a thin profile solid state device.
These features make it easier to integrate the most up-to-date and in-demand technologies into attractive, high-tech and functional center stack consoles.
